Dear Sheila,
News of Bob’s death reached me here in Orillia, and as I sat down to write something to you, memories of being Bobby’s pal in grade school and later teens together in high school came flooding back. And I’ve got to tell you it’s been a joyous experience.
I must have been eight or nine when we first met at Princess Margaret public school. We became fast friends and shared boyhood adventures together, all the things that kids could get up to and which you could never let your parents know about. Bobby was always a step ahead—faster, daring, savvy, courageous—Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer combined. You knew that whatever escapade you were planning, as long as Bobby was involved, it was going to be fun and surprising. And what a delightful rascal he was. He wanted me to take up golf, which to this day completely eludes me, and I remember being flattered when he told me on the third hole at St. George’s that I might be better suited to being a caddie.
We stayed close thorough high school and we shared the joys, follies, and humiliations of adolescence. I had long forgotten, but was delighted to remember, our feckless efforts to appear sophisticated. No tee kays—the Canadian knock-off—for us . We were only going to wear Lees or Levis, and Bobby was sure that Marion would drive us to what was then the one and only Thrifty’s store in the country. And, of course, you had to had to top those pants off with a Janzen v-neck alpaca sweater. And, yes, it was cool to be fourteen and stride around Etobicoke smoking one of the many Brigham pipes you had purchased with your paper route money.
Adult life, as it does, pulled us in different directions. Bobby to London, to Florida, me to Thunder Bay. When Annie and I returned to the south in Orillia, I had the great good fortune of having our good friend Bruce Boyes living close by. Bruce and I often talked about visiting you two, but sadly we didn’t make that happen. We often talk about Bob, and as we do I am reminded of how blessed I have been to have shared my youth with someone who befriended me, always had my back, and whose memory continues to inspire me.
Condolences,
Kim Fedderson

Sheila: Julie and I extend our condolences to you on your loss of Bob. We hadn’t crossed paths much in the last few years, but that didn’t matter as when we did speak it was like old times. Bob, affectionately known to us as “Bobby Burns”for his impressive sideburn-growing ability, was a once-in-a-lifetime individual who went all out on whatever he was undertaking. Many of his high school friends and fraternity buddies, of which I am one, can go on for hours about our hijinx during our years at Martingrove Collegiate in Etobicoke...of course, Bob was always right in the middle and usually orchestrating what was going on. We partied out on Baseline, we took clandestine trips to Buffalo, we played poker in Wilkes’ basement until all hours of the night, we raised hell down at the Charcoal Pit on Dundas, and just generally enjoyed ourselves to the fullest. And always, there was Bob with that knowing look in his eye contemplating our next adventure. He feared no one...and had the fastest feet in our group to elude chase by some guy from another school whom he had offended. On the more sober side, Bob was an excellent leader. He served as the President of our chapter of our fraternity and possessed excellent organizational, operational, and planning skills that benefitted us and the charities our fraternity members served. He was kind and generous to people and had a reputation at our school as a “can-do” sort of fellow. I taught him to drive in his Mom’s sixty-something Rambler. That was quite an experience! I also admired Bob a great deal for his knowledge of the workings of the financial markets and his candour with me when discussing the merits of certain stocks and investment strategies. He was a valuable asset to the Bank. In sum, I’m going to miss him, but I look forward to regrouping with him and all our other friends over on the other side of the river. Love you both, Julie and Bruce Boyes

Bob and I are first cousins. Our families were very close when we were young and although I was 5 years older, we shared many memorable times together. The family events that I remember most were Christmas dinners when our families would congregate at one of our houses to celebrate. We always marvelled at the volume of turkey that Bob and his older brother Dave could pack away. In the last few years, when Bob and Sheila moved from Toronto to London, we lost touch with each other. Regrettable now but our lives had gone in different directions. Bob was a kind and friendly guy who always loved a party. In the last few years as his health declined, Bob suffered a great deal. He is now at peace. Don & Judith Bowerman

Deepest condolences to Sheila and the rest of the family. Bob and I met 50 years ago as first year students at Western and he and I and Ron formed a formidable threesome at least in our minds as we carried out numerous shenanigans together. We lost touch but reconnected in London and Ottawa a decade or so ago. Bob was a great man, wonderful friend who I will miss dearly. Bob and I were born in the same hospital, same year, a week apart but didn’t learn this until years after leaving Western. RIP my friend
