Dearest Comerford family,
I am so deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Ernie. I knew him as a great friend of my Dad, Mike Bird, through wheelchair curling and the Delaware Lions. Over the years, Ernie spent many afternoons visiting with my Dad, and brought him so much happiness in a time that his health challenged him. He respected Ernie greatly, and the two loved to spend their time sitting outside chatting about family, time in the North, politics, and sports. My Dad passed 2 years ago, but I am certain he would want to extend his condolences to all of you. I have respected Ernie throughout my entire life, as a loyal friend and thoughtful soul. Ernie was widely loved in the community, and those who knew him considered themselves very lucky. Ernie sent such beautiful letters to our family at the time my Dad passed, for which I continue to be so thankful. He had a way with words that was both comforting and humorous. Ernie was so respected for his community involvement, all the way from the Canadian North to Middlesex County. I saw him as a champion of inclusion and friendship. The world is a better place for having known Ernie.
It was obvious he valued family greatly. In this time of heartache, I hope that your memories of Ernie will bring you comfort. Know that you are in the thoughts of the Bird family. I hope that Dad and Ernie might share another curling match.
With love,
Shannon, Karen, Alex, and Lora Bird

It is with great sadness that I read about the passing of Ernie, my condolences to the family, he will be missed. I had the pleasure of spending many hours at the curling rink sharing knowledge and passion for the game he loved. We coached wheelchair players together for 10 years and his enthusiasm for the game he loved was contagious. He spoke often of his time in the North and shared many wonderful stories of his experiences there. He was an inspiration to me and many others. Farewell my friend.

Our brother-in-law and uncle will be greatly missed. We always enjoyed listening to Ernie’s stories about his interesting life experiences. Over the years we visited his home in Yellowknife, Calgary and London. Back in the late 70s, he would drive Judy, Diana and Glen all the way from NWT to Sarasota, Florida to visit Judy’s parents, and they even stopped at our house in Brantford, Ontario on their way back. That Suburban had a lot of miles on it! Ernie was always up for an adventure. He was also a kind man who gave generously of his time to support the Lions Club and Wheelchair curling. Everyone loved Ernie and we will keep his memory in our hearts. Glen, Jan, Scott and Jen Churchill and families.
