Obituary of Phylis Irene Allingham
Phylis “Irene” Allingham (nee Babcock)
A resident of London, formerly of Sarnia and Dresden, Irene passed away in the palliative care unit at University Hospital with her family at her side on Oct. 21, 2017 in her 92nd year.
Irene was born in Sombra Township on Nov. 7, 1925 as the only surviving triplet of Calvin and Gladys Babcock. She was predeceased by a brother William who died at birth. She married James "Jim" Allingham on September 4, 1946. Together they enjoyed an active life of work, church and travel until Jim's death on Jan. 14th, 1986.
Irene was a devoted mother to her children: Danny Allingham (Cathy) of Dresden; Dr. Ronald Allingham (Linda) of Blenheim and Dr. Katherine McKinney (Robert) of London. Jim and Irene's first born son Robert predeceased them in infancy.
There are 7 much loved grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Grandma was always there to help out in whatever way she could and the following had the benefit of her time and wisdom: John (Corrie) Allingham of Kingston; James (Amy) Allingham of Chatham; Jennifer (Barry) Hawn of London; Michael (Natsumi) McKinney of London; Scott McKinney of St. Thomas; Kelly McKinney and husband Kenneth Duggan of St. Catharines as well as Crystal Allingham (George) of Dresden.
Irene was a long-time member of Lambeth United Church. She was active on various committees and a stalwart participant in the UCW and annual Xmas bazaar. Mom also touched many lives through her charitable gifts.
Her winning smile and kindness was extended to family, friends and strangers alike. She also loved animals especially her little dog Toby.
Irene will be sadly missed by former neighbours, the Birthday club, and her Bible Study friends. Although only a recent resident at Ashwood Manor, the staff will undoubtedly recall her gentle ways.
Friends may visit at the McFarlane & Roberts Funeral Home, 2240 Wharncliffe Road, South, Lambeth 619-652-2020 on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm where the celebration of Irene’s life will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 11:00 am. Reverend Matthew Penny officiating. Interment Dresden Cemetery at a later date. Charitable donations of your choice gratefully acknowledged.
